Margery Shane

July 24, 1928 — January 18, 2019

MARGERY MARIE (JOHANNSEN) SHANE was born July 24, 1928 to Claus and Emma (Landt) Johannsen in Pipestone, Minnesota. She was raised and attended school in Pipestone. Following her graduation from high school, she was married to Harry Vars Shane, October 22, 1946 in Pipestone. They eventually settled on the family farm, north of Pipestone where they raised their two children. When Harry passed away in August, 1966, Marge managed the farm alongside her son, Bernie, while continuing to work numerous different jobs around town. Eventually Bernie took over the farm, and Marge retired.

Marge was a sweet, salty and even peppery lady that enjoyed a little traveling, playing cards, taking her grandkids camping, fishing and on many excursions around the countryside, as well as teaching them how to drive at a ‘very’ young age—sometimes in a car, sometimes on the lawn mower. At the age of 90, she met her goal of living independently at home, on the farm, until she suffered a stroke on Wednesday, January 16. She passed away peacefully at the age of 90 years, five months, and 24 days on Friday evening, January 18, 2019, at the Pipestone County Hospice House surrounded by her family.

Marge is survived by her daughter, Barbara (Darrell “Pete”) Sietsema, Pipestone; and their children, Chris (Becky) Sietsema, Pipestone, Rob (Andy Fick) Sietsema, Sioux Falls, SD; Daughter-in-law, Mary Shane and her children, Sandy (Kyle) Swanson, Leann (Mike) Bloemendaal and Tom (Corinna Mead) Shane, all of Pipestone; 12 great-grandchildren; two step-great grandchildren; two step-great-great grandchildren; and one great-great grandchild “on the way;” her sister, Kathryne Straw; and numerous other relatives.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Harry; her son Bernard; parents, Claus and Emma Johannsen; and brothers Claus “Joe” and Robert Johannsen.

A graveside service will be held at the Old Woodlawn Cemetery in Pipestone at a later date.
