MARION BECKERING was born to Carl and Fannie (Arends) Peterson on October 1, 1930 in Chandler, Minnesota. She lived with her family on a farm near Chandler. A short time later, she moved with her family to a farm near Edgerton, Minnesota where she was raised and attended school. After she graduated from Edgerton Public High School in 1948, she attended Mankato State Teachers College for two years and completed her teaching degree. She then taught for a year in Rushmore, Minnesota. On March 22, 1951, she was united in marriage to Raymond Beckering at First Presbyterian Church in Edgerton. Following their marriage, they moved to a farm near Hatfield, Minnesota where Marion taught for one year in the Hatfield school. After that year, she stayed at home to raise their children. In 1961, they moved to Jasper, Minnesota and Marion began teaching fourth grade in the Jasper school. She taught in Jasper School District for a total of 29 years. During this time, she continued her education and received her Bachelor of Arts degree from Dakota State in Madison and her Masters degree from Augustana College in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. After she and Ray retired, they enjoyed spending their winter months in Arizona. On April 13, 2010, Marion became a resident of the Good Samaritan Communities of Pipestone where she died on Monday, July 4, 2011at the age of 80 years, nine months and three days.
Marion was a member of the United Methodist Church in Jasper where she was active in the Ladies Aid, taught Sunday School, and enjoyed having Bible studies at her home. While living near Edgerton, she was a member of First Presbyterian Church there. She was also a member of the National Educational Association. She was an avid reader, she loved animals, and she loved wild bird watching. She enjoyed traveling throughout the United States and Canada.
She is lovingly remembered by her husband Ray Beckering of Jasper, Minnesota; two daughters, Lori Cocking and her husband Gary of Excelsior, Minnesota, and Debra Winrow and her husband Dennis of Chanhassen, Minnesota; two grandchildren, Kim Winrow and Alec Smith; and two sisters, Genevieve Vander Platts and her husband Louis of Sioux Falls, South Dakota, and Carol Smidt and her husband Ray of Sioux Falls, South Dakota. She was preceded in death by her daughter, Sheree Smith; her parents; and one brother, Henry Petersen.
