Marvin Laackmann

Marvin Leroy Laackmann was born on January 29, 1935 to Herman, Jr. and Fern (Hawes) Laackmann in Luverne, Minnesota. He was raised on the farm twelve miles northwest of town. Growing up on the farm, he helped with the daily chores and seasonal work. He attended country school through the eighth grade and high school in Jasper, Minnesota, graduating in 1952. He then enrolled into school at South Dakota State University in Brookings, South Dakota. Following school, he worked road construction for a short time. He then chose to enter the United States Army to serve his country. While in the service, his dad was involved in a bad accident and Marvin was needed back home to tend to the farming operation. On April 1, 1956, Marvin was united in marriage to Doris Johnson at the Jasper Evangelical Lutheran Church. They made their home on the farm in Springwater Township where they were blessed with two children. Marvin eventually took over the family operation and farmed the land and tended to the livestock until his retirement in 1996. The couple then moved into Luverne and Marvin cared for Doris through her diagnosis with Pick’s Disease. She preceded him in death on June 13, 2003. Marvin continued living in their home in town and then he moved to the Tuff Memorial Nursing Home in Hills, Minnesota on October 10, 2024. On Friday, February 7, 2025, Marvin died at the Sanford Luverne Medical Center under hospice care at the age of 90 years and nine days.

Marvin was a member of the United Methodist Church in Luverne. He was proud of farming and helped with the local 4-H program throughout his career. He was a member of the Arthur Moeller American Legion in Hardwick and served as a director on the rural electric board for 13 years. He also served on the Jasper school board for many years. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, snowmobiling, woodworking, welding and repair work of all kinds. He also enjoyed dancing with Doris nearly every Saturday night at the Rock County VFW in Luverne.

He is lovingly survived by his two children, Kristi (Bryon) Franken of Luverne, and Brian (Joyce) Laackmann of Worthington, Minnesota; three grandchildren, Carissa (Jason) Spaar, Candace Laackmann (Bouy Moumy), and Easton (Laura) Laackmann; three great-grandchildren, Sawyer, Finn, and Huckston Laackmann; four step-grandchildren, Casie Johnson, Brett, Matt and Adam Pederson; three step-great-grandchildren, Mason and Cayden Nadolney and Janessa Kritzberger; three sisters, Lois Ulrickson of Viborg, South Dakota, Erna Christianson of Viborg, and Shirley (Garry) Hoyme of Zumbrota, Minnesota; special friend, Carol Grimaldo of Luverne; and other family. He was preceded in death by his wife, Doris; granddaughter, Serena Franken; niece, Beth Hoyme; nephew, Casey Bonhorst; parents; and a sister, Carol Laackmann.
