MAVIS (HAGEBAKKEN) GRAGE was born to Thorvald and Katinka (Peterson) Hagebakken on July 31, 1922, on a farm in Rock County, Minnesota, near Jasper, Minnesota. She attended country school and then Jasper High School. On July 10, 1944, she was united in marriage to Victor Grage in Manilla, Iowa. While Vic completed his time in the armed forces, Mavis continued to live with her parents. When he returned to the Jasper area, they lived on a farm near Garretson, South Dakota. In 1951, they moved into Jasper where Mavis raised their children. She then became employed at the Jasper State Bank until her retirement on January 1, 1985. Her husband preceded her in death on February 1, 1985. After his death, she continued to live in Jasper. Mavis later became a resident at the Tuff Memorial Home in Hills, Minnesota where she passed away on Sunday, August 22, 2021, at the age of 99 years and 22 days.
Mavis was an active member of the Jasper Evangelical Lutheran Church where she was the church organist for 40 years, accompanied the choir, and was a member of the WELCA. She was also a member of the Springwater Snappers Extension Club. Throughout her lifetime, she made a lot of lefse and rosettes. She enjoyed doing needlework, knitting sweaters, and crocheting afghans. Most of all, she was very proud of her Norwegian heritage.
She is lovingly remembered by her children, Linda (Steve) Petri of Albuquerque, New Mexico and Kathy (Carl) Copeland of Denver, Colorado; and two sisters, Doris (Jr.) Fern of Minneapolis, Minnesota, and Ardith (Don) Haraldson of Minneapolis, Minnesota. She is preceded in death by her husband; her parents; and two sisters, Ethel and Helen.
