Maynard "Bud" Winsel

Maynard “Bud” Kenneth Winsel was born to Otto Herman and Gladys (Otkin) Winsel on October 31, 1932 on a farm near Pipestone, Minnesota where he attended country school in District 14. He continued his education at Pipestone High School. After his high school graduation in 1950, he became employed at the Pan-O- Gold Bakery in Pipestone. On January 3, 1951, he entered the United Stated Air Force and served over two years in Japan. On April 10, 1954, he was united in marriage to Darlene Elsie Jensen at the First Presbyterian Church in Holland, Minnesota. Following their marriage, they lived in Youngstown, Ohio while Bud completed his time in the air force. On November 10, 1954, Bud was honorably discharged from the service and they returned to the family farm, “Holl-A-Wood Acres” where they farmed and raised their children. In 1963, they purchased this farm. Bud actively farmed here until his retirement. Bud passed away peacefully on Tuesday, February 18, 2025, at the Good Samaritan Society at the age of 92 years, three months, and 18 days.

Bud was a member of First Presbyterian Church in Holland where he served as an elder and trustee. He was also a member of the Earl Gruis American Legion Post 534 in Holland, the Farm Bureau, the Soil Conservation Board, the Woodstock Elevator Board and the Southwest Minnesota Shrine Club. He loved to travel, and he and Darlene traveled throughout the United States and several international countries. They also hosted several exchange students, including students from the Philippines, Finland and Japan. Bud and Darlene enjoyed dancing to the old-time music. He liked to keep busy and spent his free time with his woodworking. Above all, he loved the time he spent farming. In 2016, Bud and Darlene moved into Ridge View Estates, an assisted living facility in Pipestone.

He is survived by his wife, Darlene Winsel of Pipestone, Minnesota; his son, Ken (Barb) Winsel of Woodstock, Minnesota and their children, Erin Winsel of Marshall, Minnesota, Brian (Elizabeth) Winsel of Holland, Minnesota, Emily (Josh) Meyer of Sioux Falls, South Dakota and Elizabeth (Luke) Castle of Brandon, South Dakota; his daughter, Kandyce (Greg) Peton of Courtland, Minnesota, and their children, Natasha Graham (Matt Calkins) of Lincoln, Nebraska, Barry Peton (Tanaha Simon) of New Palestine, Indiana; and son, Kerry (Cindy) Winsel of Aurora, Colorado; and sixteen great-grandchildren; his brother, Marlin (Joan) Winsel of Freeport, Illinois; and two sisters, Lois Hansen of Chanhassen, Minnesota, and Marlys (Mike) Gahn of Rio Verde, Arizona. He was preceded in death by his son, Kevin; his parents; and two sisters, Delores Willert and Lorna Mae Goodman.
