META MARIA FICK, daughter of Herman and Margaret (Heinsohn) Winter, was born on June 24, 1921 in Basbeck, Germany. She received her baptism on July 10, 1921. On October 1, 1922 Meta came to the United States of America with her parents and moved to George, Iowa. They then moved to a farm near Olivet, South Dakota in 1923 where the family resided until moving to a farm near Boyden, Iowa in 1930 so that their children could attend Christian day school. Meta was a member of St. John Lutheran Church in Boyden and was confirmed with German language in her faith on April 14, 1935. On February 11, 1942, Meta was united in marriage to Paul Martin Fick, from Luverne, Minnesota, at St. John Lutheran Church in Boyden. The couple moved to a farm three miles southwest of Luverne, where they farmed for the next 39 years while also raising their nine children. On January 1, 1981, Meta and Paul formally retired and moved into Luverne. Paul passed away on April 2, 2012. Meta continued to reside at their home until 2014 when she moved to the Poplar Creek senior living community in Luverne.
On Saturday, December 16, 2017 while at the Sanford Luverne Hospice Cottage, Meta went to be with the Lord at the age of 96 years, five months and 22 days.
Meta was a member of St. John Lutheran Church in Luverne where she belonged to LWML, Circle, and quilting guild, attended bible study, and was a compassion friend and part of the prayer chain. She was a member of Garden Club and Neighborhood Club. Meta enjoyed gardening and flowers, quilting, crocheting and cooking, and reading her daily scriptural devotions. She will be remembered for her strong Christian faith and her remarkable memory. She held a deep love for her family and compassion towards others.
Meta is lovingly survived by her nine children, Loren (Shirley) Fick of Luverne, Anita (Bill) Chiaramonte of Cincinnati, Ohio, Margaret Albrecht of Peoria, Illinois, Norma (Randy) Goetz of Satellite Beach, Florida, David (Darlene) Fick of Valley Springs, South Dakota, Betty (Daniel) Werth of Buffalo Lake, Minnesota, Ronald (Elaine) Fick of Luverne, Krista (Harlan) Kroon of Rock Rapids, Iowa, and James (Renee) Fick of Brandon, South Dakota; 27 grandchildren; 45 great-grandchildren; five siblings, Hilda Uilk of Pipestone, Minnesota, Alvin Winter of Whitesboro, Texas, Ruben Winter of Sheldon, Iowa, Luella Loges of Boyden, Iowa, and Norven Winter of Boyden; sister-in-law, Florence Fick of Beaver Creek, Minnesota; and many other relatives. She was preceded in death by her husband, Paul; stillborn daughter, Mary; son-in-law, Rev. Thomas Albrecht; her parents, Herman and Margaret; brothers, August Winter and Gerhardt Winter; and sisters, Louise Uilk and Elsie Fick.
