MYRON 'MIKE' A. HENDERSON was born on February 14, 1925 to Henry and Clara (Austin) Henderson in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. He was raised in Colton, South Dakota attending school there and graduating from Colton High School in 1943. On July 31, 1944 he enlisted in the United States Army. Mike proudly served until his honorable discharge on September 8, 1945 and was awarded the Purple Heart Medal of Commendation for his service to his country. A month later, Mike was united in marriage to Colleen Rae Love on October 28, 1945 at the First Lutheran Church in Colton, South Dakota. The couple moved several times in the early years residing in Colton, Hartford, and Lennox, South Dakota, Burtrum and New Prague Minnesota. In 1954, Mike and Colleen moved to Luverne, Minnesota and lived there until 1979. They moved to Montgomery, Minnesota that year. Following Colleen’s death on March 6, 1997, Mike returned to Luverne and resided there until the present. Mike’s career evolved within agriculture. First, as a farmer then later specializing in cattle breeding as technician and trainer for the Minnesota Valley Breeder’s Association later renamed 21st Century Genetics. In the late 1990’s he began working with the Minnesota State Parks. In 2006, Mike moved to the Minnesota Veterans Home in Luverne where on Tuesday, March 1, 2011, he died peacefully at the age of 86 years and 15 days.
Mike was an active member of Grace Lutheran Church in Luverne, Minnesota. He served as congregation president and sang in the choir. His passion for music also led to his membership in the Norse Glee Club. Mike also enjoyed fishing, camping, and the game of golf.
Mike will be lovingly remembered by his children, Allen and his wife Judy Henderson of Albert Lea, Minnesota, Roger and his wife Vicky Henderson of Luverne, Minnesota, and Vicki and her husband Paul Maurer of Grand Rapids, Minnesota; seven grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; three sisters-in-law, Jean Henderson, Carole (Orren) Lee and Donna (Lawrence) Koch, all of Sioux Falls, South Dakota; one brother-in-law, A. Burton Love of Cedar Falls, Iowa; and other family and friends. He was preceded in death by his loving wife of 51 years, Colleen; his parents, Henry and Clara Henderson; brothers, Hardy and his wife Ila Henderson, and Lauren Henderson.
A tree will be dedicated in memory of Mike by Sanford Luverne Hospice. Blessed be his memory!
Memorials are preferred in lieu of flowers.
