NATHAN ORLANDO SKATTUM was born on Tuesday, July 17, 1973 to Thomas and Nancy (Serie) Skattum at Luverne Community Hospital in Luverne Minnesota. He was raised on an acreage outside of Luverne. Nate attended Magnolia Elementary School (Go Bulldogs!) and graduated from Luverne High School in 1991. Nate furthered his education by attending Worthington Community College. He then joined his father to operate the family business, Skattum’s Confinement Systems, Inc.
On March 18, 1995 Nate was united in marriage with Mandy Ann Walgrave at the St. Catherine’s Catholic Church in Luverne, Minnesota. Following their marriage, they made their home in Luverne. The couple was blessed with three wonderful children, Reed Thomas, Allie Nichole and Max Rodney. Nate continued to work at SCS, Inc., enjoying 22 years of working closely with his father to grow the business. He cared deeply about his customers and employees and worked hard to serve them. Nate was also active in his community, announcing high school wrestling duals and hockey games and being willing to lend anyone a hand whenever needed. He served in the Knight’s of Columbus and was a member of First Farmers and Merchants National Bank Board of Directors.
Nate was an active member of Living Rock Church, where he took delight in deepening his relationship with Jesus as well as his fellow brothers and sisters in Christ. Growing up he loved the freedom of the farm, often playing outside endlessly, riding horses, driving the three-wheeler or go-cart and working for the business. He also enjoyed playing various sports including wrestling and football. Later in life he found pleasure in golfing, playing in the Wednesday men’s league and catching rounds with his sons whenever they could fit them in. He was deeply in love with his wife and was blessed to share the past twenty years with her. He was her “love-muffin” and she his “babycakes”. They shared a 1 Corinthians 13 kind of love, one that was patient and kind. He also loved being a part of his children’s lives, attending all sorts of sporting and music events over the years. He enjoyed watching Reed pitch baseball, Max defend the goal in hockey and twirling Allie’s hair. His most cherished memories with his wife and children were coming home from church on Sunday mornings and preparing breakfast for his family and grilling burgers and steaks outdoors on a beautiful summer evening. Nate loved relaxing with his family.
In December of 2014, Nate was diagnosed with cancer. On Thursday morning, January 22, 2015 at his home with family by his side, Nate passed peacefully into the arms of his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, at the age of 41 years, 6 months and 5 days.
Nate is survived by his wife, Mandy, and three children, Reed, Allie and Max, all of Luverne; parents, Thomas and Nancy Skattum of Luverne; two brothers, Matthew (Nichole) of Eden Prairie, Minnesota and Zachary (Jennifer) of Savage, Minnesota; and many other family and friends. He was preceded in death by his paternal grandparents, Orrie and Edith Skattum; and maternal grandparents, Wallace and Caroline Serie.
