NELLIE MAE MOEN was born the youngest of 13 children to Andrew and Nellie (Kenyon) Burch on April 26, 1927 in Pipestone, Minnesota where she was raised and received her education. At a young age she cleaned homes for various families and later worked at Fecker’s Produce. In April of 1951, Nellie was united in marriage to Harlan Moen. Nellie raised and provided for the couple’s four children. Nellie’s pride and joy were her children, and as the years went by, her grandchildren as well. On September 14, 2010 she became a resident at the Good Samaritan Communities of Pipestone, where on Monday, December 24, 2012 she died peacefully at the age of 85 years, seven months and 28 days.
In her younger years, Nellie enjoyed putting on her spike heels and red lipstick and making her way to the Playmor Dance Hall. She enjoyed shopping for clothes and baking bread. She loved to have her grandchildren over and spend as much time with them as possible.
Nellie is survived by her children, Gale Vander Grift and her friend Curt DeZeeuw of Ruthton, MN, Marlene Wartner and her husband Wayne of Mesa, AZ, and Ricky Moen of Flandreau, MN; eight grandchildren, Barry Vander Grift, Malissa Bentley, Anna Preston, Rebecca Schulze, Jeff Vander Grift, Kevin Moen, Krystle Gamrak, and Buddy Moen; and eleven great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her daughter, Betty Zeinstra; her parents; and her 12 siblings.
