Orlando Dale Pluim, age 62, of Pipestone, Minnesota, passed away peacefully on March 29, 2025. Orlando was the beloved son of Orville and Audrey (Vander Weide) Pluim. He was born on November 9, 1962, in Sioux Center, Iowa, and was baptized at the Netherlands Reformed Church in his hometown.
He graduated from Luverne High School in 1981 and went on to complete his studies at Minnesota West Community and Technical College, graduating in 1991. On June 22, 1985, he married the love of his life, Janice Lynn Van Ruler, at Zion United Methodist Church in Pipestone, Minnesota.
Orlando made a lasting impact through his work as the owner of Pluim Construction and, later, during his time at Pipestone Building Materials before retiring. He was known for his strong work ethic, dedication, and willingness to lend a hand wherever it was needed.
Orlando had a passion for family, and nothing brought him more joy than spending time with his grandchildren. He also loved camping—especially his summers working at the Pipestone campground—fishing, playing board games, helping his sons with home projects, and exploring the Pluim family genealogy. Despite living with COPD for the past 25 years, he was known for his warmth, resilience, and ability to strike up a heartfelt conversation with anyone.
He is lovingly remembered by his children, Nick (Amanda) Pluim of Fort Worth, Texas, Matt (fiance, Gracia Frias) Pluim of Dallas, Texas, Sean Pluim of Harrisburg, South Dakota, and Jessica (significant other, Jeremy Dobernecker) Rye of Sugar Creek, Missouri. He was a proud grandfather to Hendrik Pluim, Elsiella Resmen-Pluim, Raiden Coyle, Dominic Rye-Dobernecker, and Ayden Rye-Dobernecker, and a great-grandfather to Ezekiel Rye-Dobernecker.
Orlando is also survived by his siblings, Douglas (Tina) Pluim of the Philippines; Curtis (Krystal) Pluim of Champlin, Minnesota, and Vaughn (Shawna) Pluim of Brooklyn Park, Minnesota; as well as his sisters-in-law, Bonnie (Danny) Haken of Pipestone, Minnesota, and Sharon Kraft of McKinney, Texas.
He was preceded in death by his loving wife, Janice (Van Ruler) Pluim; his twin brother, Mark Pluim; his father-in-law, Henry Van Ruler; mother-in-law, Dena Van Ruler; and brother-in-law, Richard Kraft.
Orlando’s warmth, kindness, and steadfast love for his family and community will be remembered always. He will be dearly missed by all who knew and loved him.
Memorials are preferred and may be directed to Orlando's family.
