PAUL MARTIN SCHROEDER was born on October 17, 1946 to Calvin and Helen (Harding) Schroeder. He was raised on the family farm west of Beaver Creek. This farm was woven into the fabric of his being and was where he called home for his entire life. In addition to learning through real life on the farm, Paul attended and completed his formal schooling through the Beaver Creek Public School. Upon graduation, Paul remained helping his Dad on the farm. On May 20, 1978 he was united in marriage to Carolyn Peterson. The couple later divorced, but remained friends ever after. Paul continued farming and never retired. He loved all aspects, from animals to crops and milking the cows to operating the tractors. He enjoyed planting seeds, watching them grow and then harvesting the crop which they yielded. In addition, he enjoyed vegetable gardening and hunting asparagus. Later in life, he also held an armored truck job in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. In September 2011, Paul was diagnosed with prostate cancer. It could be argued that he had it much earlier as throughout his life Paul steered away from modern medicine. He believed cure salt or bacon would remedy most any ill. Due to his declining health, Paul spent his last year on home hospice. On Thursday, May 23, 2019, while at the Sanford USD Medical Center in Sioux Falls, Paul went to join God’s flock in Heaven at the age of 72 years, seven months and six days.
Paul was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Beaver Creek. He was a member of the Beaver Creek Jaycees, where he had served a term as President. He enjoyed bowling, fishing, following the Minnesota Twins and Vikings, and going to the casino (which he commonly referred to as “work”). Family was important to Paul. He never missed family get-togethers and loved spending time with his grandkids.
Paul is lovingly remembered by his daughter, Shelly (Terry) Taylor of Beaver Creek; five grandchildren, Katelin Schroeder, Shaun “DJ” Swenson, Jr., Faith Taylor, Riley DeRoo and Calvin DeRoo; and other family and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents.
