Paul Robert Jansen, age 59, passed away unexpectedly following hip surgery on Tuesday, February 5, 2019 in Marshall, MN. The family is planning a memorial service that will be held on Monday, February 11 at 11:00 AM at Open Door Assembly of God Church, 711 North Bruce Street, Marshall, MN. Visitation will occur at the church starting at 10:00.
Paul Robert Jansen was born December 5, 1959 in Luverne, Minnesota, the fourth son of Virgil (Bud) and Geneve Jansen. Weeks after his birth, Paul underwent significant brain surgery with an uncertain expectation. After the surgery, he astonished his family and friends by eventually learning to walk, and displaying a precocious and extremely high language level, and amazing recall. With his intense need for personal independence, Paul struggled in an ongoing way with the reality that he needed significant assistance to manage his life.
He graduated from the Morris Area High School and from Southwest State University with a degree in history. Paul was passionate about religion, politics, and sports. His religious devotion took him to seminary, a trip to the Holy Land, and as a proud participant in marches. He enjoyed Christian fellowship in several churches in Pipestone, Alexandria, and Marshall, and when he was in church, he sang with great fervor.
Paul didn't hesitate to ruffle feathers by sharing his strong political opinions and was often scolded by his father, "Paul, no politics and religion at the dinner table!" He was a passionate sports enthusiast, avidly following the teams from Southwest State University, and lately had been musing about moving to Mankato in order to better follow the collegiate teams there.
Paul also had a very tender heart for children and spoke sweetly with every child he interacted with.
Paul is survived by his brother, Keven (Beth) of Alexandria, MN; sister, Lori (Rick) Atkins of Rapid City, SD; sister-in-law, Teresa Jansen of Pipestone; eight nieces and nephews and 13 grand nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Bradley and David; and nephew, Richard Jansen.
The family would like to thank Paul’s team of support that made it possible for him to experience a varied and interesting life. Upon his passing, Paul was able to improve the lives of others through his gift of tissue donation.
Inurnment will be held at Memory Gardens in Luverne, MN at a later date.
