RICHARD ALLEN PRINSEN was born September 21, 1949, in Tyler, Minnesota to Walter and Hazel Prinsen. Richard grew up in rural Southwest Minnesota, farming with his family. He graduated from Lake Benton High School in 1968. He attended vocational college in St. James, Minnesota. Richard served in the United State Army as a sergeant, spending most of his time in Vietnam. Richard earned many military awards and was always proud of serving his country.
Richard met his wonderful wife, Joan, in January of 1973, and they were married that September at First Baptist Church in Hawarden, Iowa. The couple made a life together in Pipestone, Minnesota and were married for 47 years. Richard’s love and joy was his family, rarely apart from his wife, Joan, and loving his 3 children, Brian, Dawn and Melissa; his son-in-law, Eric; and his grandchildren, Jayden, Ethan, and Brooks.
Richard had a passion for the outdoors, carpentry, and gardening. He enjoyed his farm, working on projects, and woodworking. Richard was a very hard worker and spent the last 6 years enjoying his retirement. One of his greatest gifts was his loyalty and the security he provided to his family, especially to his children that he would always “be there” for when needed. Richard was kind and generous, helping others often, expecting nothing in return and giving anything. He was wonderfully content and could enjoy the simplest pleasures of life: laughter, family, quiet moments, and a love of food and coffee. Richard was so very faithful, often facing life challenges with a trust in the Lord and God’s plan.
Richard became sick in December of 2020, and shortly after was diagnosed with lung cancer. Richard passed away on Thursday, March 18th, 2021, surrounded by family. His last breathes were shortly after a prayer with his pastor. Richard was a loving husband, son, father, grandpa, family member, and friend to so many in his life.
He is remembered by his loving wife, Joan Prinsen of Pipestone; children, Brian Prinsen of Dodge City, Kansas, Dawn Prinsen of Tyler, and Melissa (Eric) Novosad of Marshall, Minnesota; grandchildren; Jayden, Ethan, and Brooks. Richard was preceded in death by his parents, Walter and Hazel Prinsen; siblings, Hazel, Faye and Joe; parents-in-law, Frank and Margaret Harry; and his granddaughter, Maggie Prinsen.
