RUTH JOANN ROEMELING was an incredible woman. Born May 26, 1935 to Joe and Jeannette (Post) Berghorst, Ruth was a significant figure to many, including in her relationships as a mother, sister, friend, wife, aunt, great grandmother and more. Ruth went to be with her Lord on Tuesday, June 29, 2021 while at the Sanford Luverne Hospice Cottage at the age of 86 years, one month and three days. She will forever be remembered as such by her family and friends.
Ruth has been described by many who know and love her as strong, determined, kind, opinionated, caring and above all, a friend to everyone. Ruth gave her whole heart to others and always lent her time and ear to her children and grandchildren as they worked through the heavy parts of life. She was courageous and bravely fought cancer for more than 15 years but never let it scare her. As one of her children recently described her, Ruth was a hero.
Growing up, Ruth’s parents and siblings moved to Magnolia, Minnesota in 1941; Beaver Creek, Minnesota in 1948; and settled in Luverne, Minnesota in 1952. She graduated from Beaver Creek High School in 1952. Ruth lived on SW Park Street in Luverne for 60 years where she made lifelong, lasting friendships with her neighbors.
Ruth was united in marriage to Merle Roemeling on Friday October 29, 1954 at St. John Lutheran Church. The two went on their first date on New Year's Eve 1953. It was that day, Ruth said, that she knew she wanted to marry Merle.
Ruth was not only a hard-working mother but also a part of the workforce. She was employed by Northwestern Bell from 1952-1981. She then worked at Rose Dell insurance from 1984-1987. In 1987 she became a customer service representative at FerrellGas where she retired in 2005.
Ruth was a passionate member of her community. She was a member of the St. John Church and had a trusting, caring and loving relationship with God. She was very involved at her church, serving on the Chancel Guild, Little Lambs Board, Women’s Society, funeral committee and various circles. She was a dedicated member of the local Relay for Life group and she also lent her time to Meals on Wheels delivering food to others. Ruth was a faithful volunteer at the Luverne Stanford Hospital and the Luverne Sanford Hospice Cottage.
Ruth is survived by a mass of people who love her dearly including her children David (Pamela) Roemeling of Wichita Kansas; Bradley (Susan) Roemeling of Salem, Oregon; Nancy (Michael) Olsen of Oakton, Virginia and Kris Roemeling of Sioux Falls, South Dakota. She is also survived by her siblings Theodore (Bonnie) Berghorst of Beaver Creek, Minnesota; Thelma Symanietz of Omaha, Nebraska; and Kathy (Charlie) Ruud of Sioux Falls, South Dakota. She is also survived by 12 grandchildren and five great grandchildren. Ruth was preceded in death by her husband, Merle Roemeling, siblings Joel Berghorst, Henry Berghorst, Mill Sweezy, Sharon Flatequal, Barbara Flanigan and her parents, Joe and Jeanette Berghorst.
Ruth will be missed dearly by many. She will live on in the hearts of all of those she reached with her kindness and love.
