SANDRA MAE WESTFIELD was born to Dwayne and Lois (Berg) Lange on January 30, 1945 in Slayton, Minnesota. Her family farmed in Murray County and moved from Woodstock to Worthington and Fulda, before residing in Pipestone, Minnesota during Sandy’s grade school years. Sandy graduated from Pipestone High School in 1963 and continued her education at Winona School of Nursing for her LPN licensure, graduating in 1964. She devoted nearly 40 years of service throughout her nursing career, but her whole lifetime to being a caregiver for her family and those around her. A few years after graduating from the nursing program, Sandy and Merlin met while they were both working at the Pipestone County Hospital. They were united in marriage a year later at the First United Methodist Church in Sioux Falls, South Dakota on April 1, 1968. They raised their three sons in Pipestone. Sandy was a member of Christ the King Lutheran Church of Pipestone. She was a wonderful cook and loved to take care of her family and showed a true skill in being a grandmother by creating a special relationship with each one of her grandchildren. Times spent camping and boating on the lake are among the most memorable. Sandy also loved flower gardening and the art of quilting, embroidery and knitting. The opera and music as a whole brought great joy to Sandy. In recent years, Sandy struggled with some serious health issues and incurred a fatal injury due to a fall. She passed away surrounded by her loving family while in hospice at Pipestone County Medical Center on August 16, 2012 at the age of 67 years, six months and 17 days.
She is lovingly remembered by her husband of 44 years, Merlin; children, Chad Westfield of Pipestone, MN, Bradly Westfield of Scottsdale, AZ, Darron and his wife, Sheila Westfield of Pipestone, MN and step-daughter, Zana Westfield of Hamilton, MT; grandchildren, Hiedi, Kelsey, Nathan, Marcus, Kelly, James and William; 2 great-grandchildren; siblings, Marlene, Dennis and Randy, all of Pipestone, MN; and special nieces and nephews, Lance, Tasha, Marta and Kelly. She was preceded in death by her parents; and her nephew, William Lewinski.
