SOPHIE GERTRUDE CARLSON, 90, of Pipestone, Minnesota was called from this life on August 23, 2011 after a courageous battle with cancer.
Sophie was born to Ubbo and Helen (Rewerts) Weets on January 13, 1921 in Scotland, South Dakota. During her childhood and early teenage years, Sophie’s family moved from Scotland to Alpena and later Flandreau, South Dakota where she attended school. Her family then moved to rural Jasper, Minnesota. Sophie loved playing outdoors with her brothers and sisters and helping on the family farm. It was through her work on the farm that she developed a lifelong love for animals.
On December 31, 1948, Sophie was united in marriage to Earl Carlson at the First Lutheran Church parsonage in Pipestone, Minnesota. This special day marked the start of their love story that would last 62 years.
Sophie and Earl made their home in rural Pipestone until 2008. Sophie was a devoted partner to her husband and a loving godmother to 8 children. She was an enthusiastic supporter of her community especially her church. Sophie loved to travel and several photo albums capture the adventures and memories made throughout the years.
Sophie’s greatest enjoyment was tending to her garden. Her flower gardens made their home a showplace. She also loved hosting family and friends and always had a pot of coffee and an array of delicious desserts and home cooked meals ready for company. She also enjoyed sewing, making many of her dresses , as well as aprons.
She is lovingly remembered by her husband, Earl Carlson of Pipestone, Minnesota; her sister, Habe Suhr of Brookings, South Dakota; and 23 nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; four brothers and one sister; four nephews and one niece and several four-legged companions.
A few short paragraphs cannot summarize the life of this special wife, aunt, godmother and companion. She is greatly missed by all who knew her.
