Suzanne Claire Wathen was born on March 24, 1935 to Paul and Mary (Winkel) Meuwissen in Chaska, Minnesota where she was raised and received her education. After her graduation from Chaska High School, she attended Mankato State University. Her passion was education, and upon completion of her schooling, she moved to Pipestone and began teaching in 1956 in the Pipestone School District. On April 12, 1958, she married the love of her life, Cecil Wathen, at the Guardian Angels Church in Chaska. Following their marriage, they resided in Pipestone, Minnesota and lovingly raised four beautiful children. On December 1, 1989, she was preceded in death by her husband, Cecil. After his death, she remained in Pipestone where she taught until her retirement in 1993.
On Wednesday, March 5, 2014, Sue was transferred to the Pipestone County Medical Center where she passed away on Monday, March 10, 2014 at the age of 78 years, 11 months, and 17 days.
Sue was a mentor and inspiration, not only to her children, but to countless others. She is remembered as a faithful servant of the Lord. She was a member of Christ the King Free Lutheran Church in Pipestone and an avid participant in her Bible Study Groups. Sue loved people and loved a good time. She was a member of Aglow, Sagio, and the Hiawatha Club as well as PEO, where she held many offices, including president. Sue was active in Christian Womens, Atlas, and New Life Treatment Center. She traveled often, visiting friends and family and loved to challenge anyone to a good game of cards. Above all, Sue wanted everyone to know and love Jesus the way she did.
She is lovingly remembered by her four children, Jane Smith and her husband Philip of Pella, Iowa, Paul Wathen of Sioux Falls, South Dakota, Lori Stofferahn and her husband Randall of Chippewa Falls, Wisconsin, and Dean Wathen and his wife Lori of Andover, Minnesota; 15 grandchildren, Josh, Sierra, and Taylor Smith, Samara and Braden Wathen, Ashley Clare, Micah, Isaiah, Malachi, Qiana, Titus, and Bethlehem Stofferahn, and Tyler, Hunter, and Drake Wathen; three great-grandchildren, Elihu and Ezra Stofferahn and Madeleina Stofferahn; and two siblings, LaMont Meuwissen of Sun Lakes, Arizona and MaryJane Mohlin and her husband Mike of Belle Plaine, Minnesota. She was preceded in death by her husband, Cecil Wathen; her parents, Paul and Mary Meuwissen; three brothers, Ken Meuwissen, Robert Meuwissen, and Thomas Meuwissen; and one sister, Shirley Kohls.
