Ted Hays

THEODORE ROY HAYS was born July 10, 1941 to James and Violet (Birchfield) in Los Angeles, California. From 1941-1945 they lived in Alpha, California. In 1945 the family moved to Redondo Beach, California. He attended George Washington Elementary School and Hill Junior High School, graduating from Redondo Union High School in 1959. After graduation he enlisted in the U.S. Air Force, serving from 1959-1963 in Texas, Mississippi, and Wisconsin as a radio and radar specialist. On September 4, 1960 Ted married Charlene Beth Sheveland at Yellow Medicine Lutheran Church in Hanley Falls, Minnesota. Their marriage was blessed with four children. After leaving the service he attended Southwest Minnesota State University in Marshall, Minnesota, during which time he was an assistant basketball coach. He worked as a carpenter, a construction trades teacher, and as a building official in Pipestone and St. Peter, Minnesota. During this time the family lived in Osceola, Wisconsin, Redondo Beach, Hanley Falls, Sedona, Arizona, and Tyler, Minnesota. Charlene died in 1994 at their home at Tyler. On August 26, 1995 Ted married Karen Bauer Peters at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Tyler. The couple moved to Marshall in 2011. After a five-year illness, Ted was admitted to hospice care in Marshall in September of 2013. On October 4, 2013 Ted died at Morningside Heights Nursing Home in Marshall at the age of 72.

Ted was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church in Tyler. He enjoyed spending time with children, woodworking and card playing, as well as reading, gardening, and traveling. He was a lover of sports, and played football, basketball, and baseball throughout his high school and college years.

Ted is lovingly remember by his wife, Karen; his children, Thomas (Lisa) Hays of Parker, Colorado, Theamarie Hagemann of Blackrock, Republic of Ireland, and Brita (Gene) Van Horne of Cedar Rapids, Iowa; Karen's children, Charles (Jill) Peters and Roger Peters; grandchildren, Ethan, Zachary, and Gabrielle Hays, and Bambi, Alexis, Philip, Dillon, Cody, and Scott Peters; 2 great-grandchildren; and many other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Charlene Hays; a daughter, Catherine Annette; his parents; brothers, Harold and Ronald Hays; and sister, Betty Pope.
