VIRGINIA MAY ALLEN was born June 20, 1947 to Everett and Sara (Norton) Wharton in Luverne, Minnesota. She grew up on the family farm outside of Luverne and graduated from Luverne High School in 1965. She furthered her education at Worthington Community College and then transferred to the University of Minnesota in Duluth (UMD). In 1971, Virginia graduated from UMD with her bachelor’s degree in education. She then moved to Georgia where she taught at various school districts. She began teaching at Newnan Christian School in Newnan, Georgia in 1984. While teaching and living in Newnan, Virginia met her future husband, John Allen. The couple was united in marriage in 1989 at the Tri-County Baptist Church in Senoia, Georgia. They made their home in Newnan and Virginia continued teaching at the Christian School until her retirement in 2008. Following retirement, the couple returned to Virginia’s childhood home of Luverne and resided at the Centennial Apartments. In September 2016, she became a resident at the Tuff Memorial Home in Hills, Minnesota. On Friday, October 5, 2018 Virginia passed away at the Sanford USD Medical Center in Sioux Falls, South Dakota at the age of 71 years, 3 months and 15 days.
Virginia was a member of the First Baptist Church in Luverne. She enjoyed listening to books on tape, playing SkipBo, and eating Rhubarb. She was an avid fan of the Georgia Bulldogs football team, Minnesota Vikings and Twins. In her later years, she enjoyed attending and socializing at Luverne Senior Dining.
Virginia is survived by her loving husband, John; her brother, Robert Wharton of Luverne; and other relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents, Everett and Sara Wharton.
