WALTER G. BEYER was born October 17, 1927 to John Anthony Beyer and Margaret Jane (Van Peursem) Beyer in Ocheyedan, Iowa. He graduated from Ocheyedan High School in 1946. He enlisted into the military in October of 1946 where he served in the aftermath of World War II, building floating bridges. He was honorably discharged in July of 1947. He returned home to Ocheyedan for a few years and then entered the Army again in May of 1951 where he served in the Korean War. He was honorably discharged in May of 1953. Following his service he worked with Graves Construction out of Ocheyedan, Iowa where he worked until his retirement in 1989. After retirement he enjoyed having coffee with other local seniors at the senior citizen center. Walter was a simple man whose passion in life was serving the country he loved. He was a very active lifetime member of the American Legion. In his later years, he kept busy collecting aluminum cans and donating all of his proceeds to the American Legion. In November of 2010, Walter moved to the Adrian Country Living Cottage in Adrian, Minnesota where he died peacefully on Tuesday, December 13, 2011 at the age of 84 years, 1 month and 26 days.
He is survived by his two nieces, Sara Van Nieuwenhuizen and her husband Randy of Luverne, Minnesota, and Ruth Mettler and her special friend Kent Stirling of Tripp, South Dakota; one nephew, Cleon McClure and his wife Sue of Douglas, Massachusetts; five great-nephews; and other family and friends. He is preceded in death by his parents; his sister and brother-in-law, Johanna and Russell McClure; and a niece, Lauralynn Hauff.
Funeral arrangements are through the Hartquist Funeral Home in Luverne and the Andringa Funeral Home in Ocheyedan.
